We adopted our dog there in November. Staff was wonderful. They make a life long commitment to their dogs.
They were honest about our dogs faults, age and gave us toys and food to get started.
Our dog was there a few months and was clearly happy and well cared for.
I definitely would recommend going there for s fog.

We adopted a dog from CARL probably almost 10yrs ago at one of their events at Pet Barn. We had a great experience, we had to wait for my step-dad to come see the dog but otherwise they let us take him immediately after that with no hassle.
I regularly donate to and shop at their thrift store and the tracking app I use (Walk for a Dog) donates to them too.
I'm super shocked and disheartened to see these negative reviews. But ever since we adopted our dog there, I regularly check their website for adoptable dogs and I'm concerned that they're either not updating their site or being too strict in adopting certain dogs because I have seen the same dogs on there for YEARS. These dogs seemed like seniors when I first saw them, are they even still with us? Can they really be that hard to adopt after YEARS? Or is Carl really that strict?
I hope things have resolved after all the negative reviews I've read.

RESPONSE TO THEIR RESPONSE :
I have to say that your response sounds like you're gaslighting potential adopters a bit.
I absolutely did keep in mind that most people want perfect and easy dogs and that perfect dogs don't come off the street.
I understand you are primarily volunteer based and that they do what they can. I realize I was clear but my concern is how you treat the people who are extremely interested or in love with an animal and they get the run around through poor communication which seems to be on your end. I've read several reviews about this and how rudely people were treated and the poor communication they recieved.
One review in particular was a lady trying desperately to get information to adopt a particular dog and anyone she spoke with couldn't clarify the process to her or gave her different information and she ended up getting a negative voicemail from someone at CARL who still didn't clarify the process to her or even try to work with her because that person was annoyed at how often she contacted. She was more than diligent about trying to adopt this dog, and and aren't these the types of people you want : People who work tirelessly for their pet?
It sounds like she may still have the voicemail so I would find it hard to not believe her.
I think it would go a long way to try and repair these grievances even if it's just to update and improve your rating. When people see these reviews they tend to steer clear because what is the point of trying if they see that there is regularly poor communication.

Our new dog is great. The adoption process took hours and I was the second to adopt.
This due to a couple employees not able/willing to communicate-
Also after a few days we found Sammie, our newest addition, had toenails digging into her pads on ?. Really!? What did they check on her while there?

It’s really sad they making adopting a dog a horrific experience! We loved this dog. We asked about the dog’s background they said, he was healthy. The fee would be $150 which we would of paid ! Then we got this nonsense of a email. Oh the dog is diabetic needs insulin everyday same time . Which I’m in the medical field and never once seen in scar tissue or injection sites where the dog was given insulin ! There is also a $1500 fee every-time he needs to see us which is often !!! Oh he can only see our vets! If you truly cared about the animals you wouldn’t be trying to make $1,000s off them . Especially breaking kids hearts when they bond with the dog!!! I wish I could zero stars !!!!!

I had come into this pet shelter looking for an animal that I had fallen in love with the moment I saw him. I had tried to contact the shelter multiple times prior with no answer , since receiving no real response I went in on a saturday asking about this specific animal. I was told I'd be able to leave my contact info and be contacted by Terry that Saturday night or Sunday morning,and that I might even be able to see the animal as soon as tomorrow. I waited for terrys call but received nothing. On Sunday I called again and finally received a call from Terry and scheduled an in person meet and greet for Saturday. In this call Terry stated it was first come first serve basis. This had me concerned since I really fell in love with the animal, I went on Sunday and the staff was able to show me the dog. I knew the moment I saw him he would be a wonderful addition to our family. Staff even asked Terry if it were possible to adopt that day since there had been times prior it had been done. Terry said no, moments after leaving the shelter I received this voicemail from terry,”So Umm this is Terry with canine adoption and rescue league,I know how badly you think you want bob but I have had umm several phone calls from volunteers from staff about bob and you and uhh this is my day off so i'm not appreciating it and umm being pushy doesn't help and going out to the kennel when your not suppose to is not their job it's not the staffs job to show you the dogs, it's the volunteers job to show you the dogs. Staff is there to take care of the dogs.so, like i told you well show bob next weekend, next saturday,umm I hope they didn't show him to you today, because that is wrong it doesn't mean first come first serve like I told you,and Umm pushiness doesn't get you anywhere with this group at all sorry but that's the truth so if you can be calm and patient umm you may have had a head start thank you for not contacting us again until we contact you saturday 9 , 930 and thats when youll see him thank you.”Not staff nor anyone was ever clear on how long the adoption process would take, the fact is I was told different things from different staff, hence why i found it necessary to keep contacting this facility in order to get a clearer answer,I am highly displeased at the voicemail left to me. In this voicemail you can see the treatment staff gives to a possible client as well as the inaccuracy and inadequate customer service that any company should have towards any individual. You don't call a client pushy and you don't tell them to stop calling,you instead clarify the process as you should . I called for clarity and not one person was able to give me any. I feel targeted at this point, and that is shown in this voicemail,my chances of being chosen to adopt an animal here have been diminished by a staff member who is clearly discriminating towards an individual.I feel personally attacked and will be taking things to further matters. I hope that management finds this and contacts me personally , I have the voicemail and look forward to speaking to you.

i know this group and I love it there! My mom works with one of the owners and the dogs couldn't be better! I'm glad they rescue dogs and help them, and I was hoping for my group- Pups are Wild (PAW) to do a collaboration with them in a few years. Five stars!

Got a good adult dog there. Took 4 hours, I was the second adoption! Miscommunication!! Then 2 months later, I get notified tags were due! WHAT? Paid! Typo.... Need to get it together there. Dog also had bad ear infection and claws growing into her pads! Didn't they check her

Jordan, this is an all volunteer rescue whom need to be given a second chance. Sorry to hear communication was lacking with you adopting a puppy, hope you were able to find a dog that fit your family's needs. Adoptions fees cover those fees that a rescue has incurred to bring the adoptable dog to that point, making sure all medical issues are taken care of before the adoption. Please consider volunteering with a rescue organization in Ventura County and sharing your love for animals.
