The historic playhouse in downtown New Canaan, Connecticut, is a notable cultural landmark with a rich history that spans over a century. Initially closed in 2020, the venue underwent an extensive renovation and reopened in June 2024. The redesign was spearheaded by Cinema Lab, a company renowned for revitalizing theaters, including notable projects in South Orange, New Jersey, and Colorado. Their work in New Canaan exemplifies a commitment to blending modern amenities with the preservation of historical charm.

One of the most striking additions is the upstairs pub, which offers a thoughtfully curated dining experience. During my visit, I enjoyed a dry-aged burger accompanied by crisp French fries—both prepared to an excellent standard. The burger was juicy, flavorful, and reasonably priced, complemented by attentive service. The inclusion of such a dining space enhances the theater’s appeal, making it a destination not only for cinema enthusiasts but also for those seeking a casual yet refined culinary experience.

The theater itself has been transformed into a state-of-the-art venue. With a larger screen, an upgraded sound system, and comfortable seating, the viewing experience rivals that of more commercial chains, albeit with a unique touch. Unlike the standard reclining seats at AMC, the seating here is ergonomic and inviting, emphasizing comfort without compromising the venue’s aesthetic sophistication.

This revitalized playhouse offers an integrated experience—dinner and a movie in a single location—that surpasses the conventional multiplex outing. It stands as a testament to the enduring value of community-oriented cultural spaces. Downtown New Canaan is fortunate to have this beautifully restored venue, which is poised to be a cornerstone of local entertainment and dining for years to come.

I almost don’t want to share and get the word out but… this is a must go for a family outing, date night or just a moment to unwind.

The theater:
Intimate and perfect. We have gone with and without our kids and found it to be comfortable and perfect volume of the movie. Not to mention how beautiful it is.

The concessions:
Plenty of things to choose from from the very friendly staff members who are always smiling and happy to see you.

The pub:
Besides the gorgeous aesthetic, the food is hands down amazing. The burger was the best we ever had. And the fish and chips were perfection. The drinks are creative, refreshing and delicious.

Everyone working here is extremely pleasant to be around. Kind. Charismatic. Personable.

Best part of it all is how clean the entire place is kept. Pristine.

Lastly, the upstairs lounge (members only) is the perfect place to find your peace, get some work done, or find a connection with others.

Overall a great experience from every aspect.

I had a great time visiting the new and improved Playhouse with friends. Anthony, at the pub, was very friendly and took great care of us. The food and drinks were delicious, everything came out quick, and the vibe was remarkable. Highly recommend.

Best cheeseburger is the area. Try the toffee pudding too! A great community spot to enjoy great drinks, food, and conversation with patrons and the staff. So amazing to have this as part of a theater. It’s a complete experience and so much better than the big box places. Real food, drinks, and movies!!

We went over the 4th of July weekend to grab a drink and the see a movie. This is how the place is marketed and advertised. The bar was not open and the person behind the counter could not tell me when it would be. Also, the ICEE machine was broken and the woman behind that counter was quite pushy. Not off to a good start. I understand there are glitches in new openings but we've waited 3 YEARS for this thing to be finished. You've got one shot at a first impression. Do better.

We went yesterday and we took a picture, it was my daughter’s first time at a theater. We came from NY and our friends were amazed at the beauty of the theatre. Can’t wait to come back again. If I could give 10 stars I would!
