As an animal lover, volunteer and foster, I admire the commitment and dedication that has allowed FDR to rescue, rehabilitate and, most importantly, rehome over 12,000 dogs who would otherwise have died in overwhelmed shelters or on roadsides or wherever they were dumped. That’s 12,000 dogs and 12,000 happy families because Dog + Human = Family ?

We had a great experience working with Family Dog Rescue in Sonoma. They were very communicative throughout the adoption process and helped us find a great dog for our family. Our dog was spayed/neutered the day before our appointment to meet her and they called and emailed to let us know they needed to monitor for 24 hours so we would not have to make the drive twice and quickly rescheduled us for the next day.

TLDR; This rescue allowed us to adopt a very sick, un-neutered dog. Communication was frustratingly slow. I felt like I died a little bit inside trying to work with this rescue.

We adopted our dog in November 2022. When we took him home he was emaciated and had horrible kennel cough. He would cough throughout the entire night and could barely eat or drink. The rescue had been giving him antibiotics for over 2 weeks before we adopted him and gave us an additional week’s supply. He wasn’t getting better, so I reached out to them for advice and they basically said that they were no longer responsible for him or his health. When we took him to the vet, the vet told us that the rescue had been giving him the wrong meds. They prescribed us something else and within 3 days, his cough was pretty much gone. I’m not sure how the rescue decided which meds to give him but it makes me sad knowing he had been taking the wrong antibiotics for 3 weeks.

Because he had kennel cough, the rescue wasn’t able to get him neutered before we adopted him. We had to put down a $250 deposit on top of paying the adoption fee to ensure that we would get him neutered. Alright, fine, I get that. However, when I tried to set up a neuter appointment, it took literally WEEKS for the rescue to respond to any email I sent them trying to schedule an appointment. This was frustrating because not only were they holding our deposit but we couldn’t put him in daycare until he was neutered. We also found out that he had not received a rabies shot when the records they gave us said he had. I asked the rescue if they would reimburse us for the rabies shot and they agreed. We finally got him neutered in February 2023. They gave us our deposit back in March but guess what happened when I reminded them about the rabies shot reimbursement? No response. I didn’t even try to contact them again. I just wanted to be done with the whole thing.

We love our dog so much but would not recommend working with this rescue. The terrible communication and just overall disorganization made what was supposed to be an exciting time extremely stressful. I don’t like leaving negative reviews but felt like I needed to share my honest experience.

Attached is a video showing how sick he was when we adopted him and a couple more recent ones of him being a happy healthy boy ?

The staff here is a bit hard to communicate with and are a bit unapproachable. They’re very eager to tell people what they want to hear to get dogs adopted and or in foster homes.

I reached out countless times pertaining one dog that was available for rescue. The response time from the organization would take a week or 2 or no response at all until I followed up again. I tried multiple times to set up a phone call and a visit only to get sporadic responses from the organization, each time promising they would get back to me with answers. It was very frustrating, considering I was interested in saving a dog’s life. I’ve rescued many dogs in my life and I’ve never had an issue with the organization getting back to me. As they want the dog to find committed forever home as soon as possible. Extremely unprofessional. This dragged on for almost 2 months.

We could not be more pleased with our experience at Family Dog Rescue. Would give 10 stars if we could. The staff was extraordinarily knowledgeable, patient, and supportive, especially Marisa who helped us every step of the way through our adoption process. We will be recommending Family Dog Rescue to all our friends and get excited whenever we meet FDR dogs out on walks. We say we hit the dog jackpot with our sweet girl, but in reality FDR team matched us with exactly what we were hoping for, and for that we’re eternally grateful.
