Yesterday morning I called Iberia Parish Animal Shelter for help with the removal of a stray dog, Who has persistently popped up and terrorized objects in my yard, Continues to rip up items, damaging my property and attempting to mount my female canine, which is in heat.
Every time I let my female canine outside for exercise and the potty breaks This stray dog pops up And tries to hump my dog. I shoe the dog away but It persistently tries to jump on my dog while I have her on the leash in my own yard. I relayed this very information to the shelter yesterday and today and to the sheriff department today, and I also called my city councilman Michael Landry that handles district 2, I must say I left a message from Michael Landry earlier today. I’m sure he is a busy man and I am looking forward to receiving a callback from him but as of now, I have not received any assistance. It is a very sad situation when the taxpayer is paying for A service unwillingly being taxed on, but yet when you try to use the service that your taxpayer money is providing, they are no help.
Needless to say this animal has not left my yard and continues to remain here until this day.
After calling yesterday and again reaching out today for help from a taxpayer funded service we all contribute towards, unfortunately no assistance has yet came.
I’m told I was put on a waiting list for them to remove the animal from the yard. I was also told it’s a six month waiting list for a trap if they have to trap this dog to remove it.
Clearly, if you have to wait any longer than two days and the animal that is hanging around your yard then they need to higher more people are they need to sit down and reevaluate their situation and make appropriate steps to rectify the problem.
I believe this shelter needs to be audited and a review of shelter funds and their appropriation through the year calculated. For example money spent on Food, Housing, Shots, all other essentials required to properly and humanely Take care of these animals.
Once the audit and a review of appropriation of funds has been reviewed, then start working the budget.
Increased funding for The facility and tools needed for their job may be needed Yes, more funds need to be diverted to the shelter to enlarge facilities and increase personnel to better care and handle these situations that needs to be brought up in a meeting and voted on.

Now, my review is based on a 2014 visit so please bear that in mind.

Staff was friendly and helpful, and accomodated me completely. But the shelter, at that time, was overcrowded and they were getting 300 cats a month… so this is a high kill rate shelter.

They don’t have much of a choice than that because there’s only so much state budget that they can get and they have to use that budget to handle all the animals that they have. It’s not an easy job.

When I went inside, I saw so many animals. They were all caged, and it was very difficult for me because I knew I couldn’t save them all… but I went in and got two black kittens. Not many adult cats in there…

It’s difficult to see, but if you are going there to save an animal, that’s wonderful.

Great people! We transport animals and they were very friendly, willing to work with us on picking up 3 dogs going to Michigan and not a lot of shelters are willing to do that. The dogs look healthy, well-fed, and exhibit no fear or stress behaviors. Y'all have a great place here!

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.
One of the guys who worked there was completely & utterly RUDE. sent us away the first day saying they were “closed” but it was during their open time frame. The second time we tried, the same dude told us that the kitten would be euthanized & handled the kitten AGGRESSIVELY.
We tried to save a kittens life that was lost, but ended up putting it on its death bed. Definitely going back to get it before they kill it.

Only reason why there is a star, is because I can’t give this place 0 stars.

Called about 2 aggressive dogs in neighborhood which are not any of my neighbors dogs. Called at 0700 and at 1230 Called back to see if a unit has been sent and was told no because they are cleaning. The 2 dogs have killed 6 of my rabbits. And tried to attack other animals. Also is being aggressive toward people.

Was not impressed. Though the info stated they were available from 11 to 3pm to look at the dogs, when we got there we were told that we had to register an account with a third party website and fill out an application there. I'm not interested in receiving emails after I've already got a dog and that was required for registration. Their prices were higher than all the other places and they don't spay/neuter the animals on location; they give a voucher to have it done at a vet. I didn't feel that they were genuinely concerned about the animals being adopted.

The people were friendly and seemed very nice but the shelter appears to be severely understaffed and without resources.

I've been to many shelters in my lifetime and currently have 3 rescue dogs so I'm familiar with the general chaos and odor however this was really bad. Every kennel, even unoccupied ones, had piles of feces which had been there long enough to dry out. Many of the dog beds in the kennels had piles of feces on them too.

It's clear that they are not cleaning as often as they should and it's a shame because unsanitary conditions like that can negatively impact the animals' health, not to mention the amount of stress it causes them to be in such a filthy environment.

I really hope they get more funding so they can take better care of the place.

We adopted our shelter dog Mi Vida from there. The staff is overworked, underfunded and yet they still do their job with a smile. The shelter director works so hard, on her own time, to get these animals into rescues or into homes. I am happy to support an organization that really does all it can for the animals. And, our shelter dog, is now a member of our family I couldn't imagine living without.
