We welcome the opportunity to share our impressions of the play we just witnessed at the Lake City Playhouse.

Let me say that we were both disappointed and at times, disgusted. Such a careless treatment of the works of Shakespeare should be cause for shame on the part of everyone connected with this production. My wife and I actually walked out during intermission. If there had been an earlier opportunity to leave without causing a scene we would have done so. No one possessing even a modicum of respect for the great bard could sit and witness that presentation without being dismayed at the production.

Why were we not told that this was going to be a farce? We went in good faith and felt cheated. Consequently, we will never hazard another trip to this theater. Perhaps in the past there have been other plays which were well done and worthy of applause, and so there may in future be other worthwhile productions, but alas, we will never know because we will not take the chance of again being so greatly disappointed.

This is not to say that the actors were without talent. In fact, I was impressed by their gifts. I am sure that they are capable of amazing performances. However, what we witnessed tonight did not do justice to William Shakespeare or live theater in general. We entered the theater with great expectations for an engaging evening of Shakespeare, but unfortunately, we left quite deflated.

Just watched the entire work of Shakespeare with my girlfriend, my mother, and my uncle. I laughed, I cried, I was tossed a severed head. This playful rendition is delightfully cavalier and sophomoric mixing high and low brow humor with modern references that you have to get out a bit to catch. As the actors moved between characters they kept adding layers of running jokes so the humor snowballed as the play went on. Fourth walls were shattered often keeping the audience on our feet. Sometimes literally. It was hilariously ridiculous to watch an actor play an actor who is in a play performing a play. “Does this make it deep or terrible?” one actor asks in the heart of the performance. I’ll let you decide. But for me, I’ll be back with my friends soon.

Maybe next time I’ll be able to stay for the puppet show afterwards.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED "steel magnolia" brilliantly performed. Talented actors, i laughed, cried, all emotions! The trip from the tri-cities was very much worth it! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Will definitely be taking the 3-hour drive again just to see another performance!
