Astor house has been a godsend for my mother. I can sleep at night knowing she is safe and cared for. She has kept her independence and is able to focus on living rather then worrying about cleaning up or making meals. She goes on outings to local stores, has transportation to many of her appointments, and really enjoys working puzzles with her friends. Moving to Astor House has also improved her mood. She always has someone else to talk too and reasons to get up in the morning. This has really been a good place for her.

The absolute worst place to move anyone that is elderly that you love. The administration will get on the microphone while they are suppose to be enjoying the slop that they call meals and calls the residents "THRASHY" because they missed the trashcan with a paper towel in the bathroom. Constantly run out of food that they have on a menu that they plan. Serve dry sandwiches with crumbled chips and wilted
lettuce. They offer light housekeeping which never comes, dirty coffee station with dust and disgusting coffee spills on it. Non working fire alarms. This place should be ashamed of themselves. Will hound you for money when your loved one doesn't die within 30 days of a 30 day notice. I do not recommend this place and if there was a lower score than one star I would give them that.

Astor House is a nice-looking environment and with people working there. Sometimes there are not enough people to serve at meal time and meals can take a long time to come out of the kitchen. The food could be better oriented toward seniors, having less red meat and more whole grains. The communication systems are wanting. Loudspeakers in the hallways are used and many residents have trouble understanding what's being said. It's a much noisier street than a first time visitor would think because it's a residential area but loud cars are allowed to broadcast their loud pipes through the area. So, although it calls itself an "Independent Living" place, you don't control the noise or the food quality or pace of food service. Astor House needs a system whereby it can count the number of meals a resident takes advantage of or otherwise adjust the monthly cost for residents who only come down half the time or some other percentage.

Extremely quiet; close to vendors; largely older women who obviously enjoy the commaraderie but who, for the most part, been friendly with me.

My Mom was in her home for over 50 years, so I was concerned when we decided to make the move into the Astor House. She has now been there for about 6 months and has settled in very well. She absolutely loves the staff, the food and the activities. I want to thank all the staff, especially Tracey, for help making my Mom’s transition a smooth one. Thank you!

I would recommend the Astor House to anyone that is looking for independent living for their loved one.

Since Atria has taken over the whole place has changed for the worst. Decisions are made to please investors and we are left out of the equation. It all now all about money. We have lost everything. Very unhappy in Portland, Oregon.

My mother’s friend just moved into the Astor House. It was my first choice when my mother needed a change from independent living. But she could not commit do to medical issues. I recommended it to My mothers friend! So I have a problem. Running out of food not having enough items at meal time. Hopefully what I read about linens and towels is incorrect also the trips and outings. One makes one giant step to move into such a facility the frame and bedrock items should always be available. Please take care of the wonderful residents and make the company give back control of the menu and outings and housekeeping items .... to the staff not corporate

Thank you

My has been there for 1 1/2 years now. When we first put him there I thought it was the perfect place. Now I'm not so sure.
The people working there and the residence are all wonderful. The problem lies with the company themselves. They have cut back on to outings to twice a month instead of every week. Even then their bus only carries about 10 to 12 people depending on how many wheel chairs they have. There are over 150 residents so most dont get to go anyway.
Their chef is good but has to follow a set menu by the company for all their homes. That doesn't allow for requests or chefs own ideas so menus gets stale. There is never enough staff at meal times so many of the residence complain about the wait times. My father has been just buying items he can heat in his with microwave and eating in his room.
Rooms are nice with small balconies and full size refrigerators and large bathrooms. The rooms are cleaned once a week. Here again they staff now only change bed clothes every other week instead of weekly. They are only getting one set of towels for all week instead of 2 sets per week.
Love all the people that live there and all the staff but if Astor house doesn't make some good changes I will be looking for another place to move him.
The location is great within 5 min of Newburg hospital. Albertsons is 5min. away in opposite directions well.
