Very happy to find this gem. The museum had very interesting exhibits with book after book of special detail on the unique shell carvings. Entrance is free while they are in the process of upgrading everything, parking, trails, and the walking path plaques. There is one trail, split into a long walk ~2 miles and a shorter one ~1mile. It is a lovely peaceful easy walk to see the mounds and picture what it might have looked like hundreds of years ago. I very much enjoyed my visit and talking with Anna the director about some of the particulars of the Spiro people, and would love to visit again when their upgrades are done. Highly recommend!

Peaceful, meditative walk to 3 major mounds and smaller ones. Craig's mounds is the idea of it since it was excavated. This was the burial mound. Next to it is the nature trail. Brown mound is the temple mound and the area around we're the elite homes.

The visitor center is worth a visit with museum quality information and a bathroom. It's climate controlled. Right now entrance is free. They are investing 1.5 million in upgrading everything, parking, trails, and the plaques.

According to the staff member, the site is currently investing in major improvements; the admission is being waived during the process. Still, this is an amazing preservation of native history and well worth your time

Very interesting historical site. I have seen artifacts from the site in museums elsewhere and really enjoyed seeing where they were found. It's a small park and evidently only one employee. The grounds were in need of mowing and general cleaning. The outdoor signs are faded and need replacing.

A wonderful couple of hours. We walked the two mile trail and read the posted facts about the Spirit Mounds. A fascinating piece of history.. it had snowed so the walk was beautiful and Serene. When we got back to the Visitors Center, we spent some time visiting with the park guide, who was so full of information and spent all the time we needed answering our many questions. We plan on bringing our grandchildren back soon for a picnic and visit

Great historical site. The gentleman was very knowledgeable and offered great insight into the history of the spiro people. They just reopened from a flood that caused them to close for months and we are hoping they get the $25,000 that insurance doesnt cover to help keep this place going.
